Record-setting Day Fuels Flying Tigers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Flying Tigers picked the right time to deliver perhaps their best performance of the season at the Hoosier Hills track and field meet in Bloomington, Ind. on Friday.

Sophomore R’Lazon Brumfield added another accolade to a successful second season at Tennessee State University by setting a personal record in the triple jump for the second time this season, which was also a meet record inside Gladstein Fieldhouse.

The triple jump of 15.90m (52-02.00) catapulted Brumfield to a first-place finish in the event. The prolific day wasn’t done for Brumfield, who also set a personal record in the long jump with a distance of 7.50m (24-07.25). The previous best by Brumfield was set in 2018 (7.33m) at the Memphis Invitational.

The Tennessee State men’s track and field team had another Flying Tiger who made his presence known in Indiana. Redshirt-junior Ashley Bailey had to put on a promising display in his home state of Indiana as the Indianapolis-native zoomed around the track to place first in the 400m run. Bailey finished with a time of 49.82.

“R’Lazon had a great day and we just had a lot of outstanding performances overall. Today, I think everyone did well. We had a lot of people step up and go in the right direction. Everybody did a great job tonight.” — Director of Track and Field, Chandra Cheeseborough-Guice
