Brumfield Wins Long Jump at OVC Indoor Track and Field Championship Day One

CHARLESTON, Ill. --- Tennessee State men’s track and field freshman R’Lazon Brumfield captured the gold medal in the long jump to lead the Flying Tigers on day one of the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championship at Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse at Eastern Illinois on Friday.

As a team, TSU is in sixth place with a total of 12 points. Eastern Kentucky currently leads the Championship with 59 points.

  • Brumfield set a new personal record in the long jump with a distance of 7.24m (23’9”) on his third jump. He finished .01m ahead of second-place finisher Chrisford Stevens of Eastern Illinois.
  • TSU also added two points with a seventh-place finish in the 400m distance medley relay. TSU’s team included Marcus Abdul, Tahj Boyd, Quintsontro Irby Jr. and Larry McNary.
  • The Flying Tigers positioned themselves to pick up major points in tomorrow’s finals in a number of events.
  • James Faison posted the best time of 21.97 in the prelims of the 200m. Faison will be joined in the finals by Brumfield, who took seventh in 22.64 in the 200m.
  • In the 60m hurdles, Isaiah Olige and Jemarruse Amos are moving on to the finals after taking second and third, respectively in the prelims on Friday.
  • Four Flying Tigers advanced in the 400m led by Olige’s second-place finish in 50.13. Faison (4th – 50.42), Jamario Scott (6th – 50.77) and Jontue McDowell (8th – 51.58) will all have the opportunity to score points in the 400m on Saturday thanks to their finishes on Friday.
  • Thomas Mosley was TSU’s top finisher in the 800m, securing a spot in the finals in eighth place in 1:56.95.
  • The 2018 OVC Indoor Championship concludes tomorrow.
