Wednesday, May 2, 2012

The Tennessee State University Track & Field team took time out of their weekend last Saturday to volunteer during the ING Kids Rock Nashville Marathon at LP Field.

Several members of the Flying Tigers and Tigerbelles assisted for several hours. The student-athletes assisted by helping park participants and spectators, while handing out water and other goodies at the end of the race.

The marathon, which is ran on the same day as the St. Jude Country Music Marathon, had over 7,100 registered participants.

"With our student athletes reaching out, it's letting the community know that we are involved," said TSU Track & Field Director Chandra Cheeseborough-Guice. "We want to let others know that we reach beyond our campus. Part of our goal is to mentor young men and women within our community."

Goals for the marathon include the encouragement of keeping young children healthy and fit. TSU track & field was glad to be part of this exciting event.

"The young children can see that the student-athletes are staying in shape," said Cheeseborough-Guice. "I think they can look up see the importance of staying fit."

The TSU Track & Field team partakes in the Ohio Valley Conference Championships on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5 in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
