NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State track and field athlete Dominique Ward has been named the 2005 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Freshman Athlete of the Year. Ward, a sprinter from Beaufort, S.C., received the honor at the awards ceremony at the conclusion of the OVC Championships. The league head coaches voted on the awards. "I am so proud of Dominique and how she has met the challenge in her freshman year," said TSU Tigerbelles head coach Chandra Cheeseborough. "She made outstanding contributions and in the final event here at the championship, she especially did a great job as the lead off runner in the 4x400. We expected continued great things from her in her career at TSU." In addition to running the first leg on the relay team which has qualified for the NCAA Regionals, Ward posted a second place finish in the 400-meter dash at the OVC Championships. She had an eighth-place finish in the 200-meters. Her time of 54.30 in the 400-meters, surpassed her earlier career high.
