MURFREESBORO --- The Tennessee State Tigerbelles got an early start to the heart of the indoor track season by participating in Middle Tennessee's Invitational and came away with four dual match wins.
The Tigerbelles were one of five teams in the field and competed against the other teams in a dual scoring system. TSU defeated Austin Peay 108-32, Vanderbilt 101.5-41.5, Western Kentucky 102-41, and host Middle Tennessee 98.3-44.2.
?It was a good start to the season for us and we had several young ladies to have good performance,? said TSU coach Chandra Cheeseborough. ? It was good to have the competition and we have a lot of time between now and when we come back after the new year to improve and continue working.?
Tigerbelle Leslie Leary captured both the 100 and 200-meter dashes with times of 7.21 and 25.16 seconds, respectively. Crystal Ewell won the 400-meters with a time of 57.74. The TSU 4x440 relay team also took home a first place finish.
Juanita Thomas was second in the mile run with a time of 5:39.78 and third in the 3000-mter run with a time of 11:37.77. Marhonte Tennial was second in the 55-mter hurdles with a time of 8.40 seconds while Rachel Mildred was fourth with a time of 8.78. Mercy Udoji was third in the 800-mter run with a time of 2:17.88.
In the field events, Kenita Woods won the shot put with a best throw of 44 feet 11.5 inches. Qiana Smith was second in the triple jump 38 feet 7.0 inches. Valencia Martin was second in the high jump with a best jump of 5 feet 2.0 inches.
The Tigerbelles will break for the holidays and have their next meet when they host the Edward S. Temple Invitational Jan. 12 in the Gentry Center.
