Tennis Closes Out Weekend with 7-0 Win Over MVSU

NASHVILLE ---  The Tennessee State men’s and women’s tennis teams rounded out the week with a shutout victory over Mississippi Valley State Saturday afternoon in the Currey Tennis Center.

The men improve to 8-4 on the season, while the Lady Tiger improve to 8-1.

“The team played really well today,” said freshman Aarushi Kakkar. “Everyone was focused and played aggressively. Everyone showed great sportsmanship.”

In a repeat of yesterday, the Tigers defeated the Devils on courts one and two to clinch the doubles point. Serbian duo Stefan Koruga and Pavle Popovic defeated Kyle Harris and Jessie Bryant 6-1, while Larry Sloan and Kato Richardson closed out doubles play with a 6-0 shutout of Jordan Freeman and Kenneth Milton.

The women did the same with Ani Popiashvili and Pragati Natraj adding another win to their doubles record, now sitting at 13-2 on the season.

With the upper hand, TSU flew into singles play with no restraints. The men shutout the Devils, not allowing MVSU to win a single set.

Freshman Morgan Cage who has gone 7-2 in dual singles this spring, had to battle for each set, letting Shaneka Hubbard win four sets in her 6-3, 6-1 victory.

"The team took care of business," said graduate assistant and former Tiger Kyle Burton. "Short preparation week for us, but I'm confident in both men and womne we will take care of each school during this upcoming week."

TSU's men welcome Saint Louis to the Currey Tennis Center next Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m., and join the women as Big Blue hosts Cumberland next Thursday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.
