Tennis Completes Day One at Coach Lalance Showdown


MURFREESBORO, Tenn. --- After placing fourth in the HBCU Invitational, the Tennessee State men’s tennis team traveled to Murfreesboro, Tenn. for its second tournament of the fall campaign. 

“We had great play in doubles and split with a very good team.” TSU Head Coach Monroe Walker III said. “Energy was high and you could tell they put work in on the practice court. Tanishq pulled out a tight match and played really well. We’ve gotten the first match out of the way and tomorrow we will settle in and play better. We’re all looking forward to playing Troy tomorrow.”

TSU started off doubles play with Grant Maddox and Pavle Popovic losing in the No. 1 slot 6-4. The Tigers would bounce back with an 6-2 No. 2 win from the team of Tanishq Mahendru and Shashank Nautiyal.

In singles, Tanishq carried out the only win for the Tigers, defeating MTSU’s Jacob Pugh in the No. 4 slot 6-3, 7-6, 7-5. Three other Tigers had extremely tough matches before losing out to three Blue Raiders. Nautiyal playing at No. 1, Maddox playing at No. 2, Popovic playing at No. 3 and Mahendru playing at No. 4.
