Men's Tennis Opens Season at HBCU Invitational

SETTING THE STAGE: The Tennessee State men’s tennis team will start its fall season at the HBCU Invitational in Atlanta.

RETURNERS: TSU returns the entire team except Amir Daniel and Second Team All-OVC selection in Daniel Bernal. Shashank Nautiyal was last years’ leader in doubles wins with 13. Grant Maddox returns as the leader in singles wins with 14 followed by Kyle Burton who finished last year with 13.

LAST SEASON: The men’s tennis team completed last season with a 9-14 record. However, they won their first conference match since 2002 beating Eastern Illinois 4-3. Daniel Bernal went on to become a second team selection for his play during the season. This is the second time in TSU history that a men’s player has earned an all-conference award.

2015 HBCU INVITATIONAL: Nautiayl (TSU), lost in the quarterfinals of Flight B singles by a score of 6-3, 7-5. Maddox won his quarterfinal matchup in flight C singles 6-3, 6-4. Maddox would lose in the semifinal of his flight 6-3, 6-3. Burton and Nautiyal teamed up for a doubles win in the round of 16 before losing a quarterfinal match 8-6

UP NEXT: The Tigers will compete in the ITA Regionals in Knoxville, Tenn. From Oct. 20-24.
