TSU Men's Tennis Drops 6-1 Decision at Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Daniel Bernal (Bogota, Colombia) won at No. 1 singles, while Jorge Rodriguez (Bogota, Colombia) and Shashank Nautiyal (Delhi, India) were victorious at No. 3 doubles in the Tennessee State men’s tennis team’s 6-1 loss to Austin Peay at the Governors Tennis Center in an Ohio Valley Conference match on Friday.

The Tigers (8-12, 1-6 OVC) nearly won the doubles point, but Austin Peay (5-8, 4-2 OVC) pulled out victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take a 1-0 lead. The momentum carried into singles where the Governors took five of the six singles matches.

“I think we let a great opportunity slip away,” TSU Head Coach Monroe Walker III said. “We had two match points in doubles and lost. That could have put us up 1-0. In singles, Kyle (Burton) had a tough three setter, and Daniel (Bernal) took care of business. Kyle is really dialed in and playing good tennis. We are looking for better results tomorrow.”

Squaring off with Alex Kartsonis and Chad Woodham at No. 3 doubles, the Rodriguez/Nautiyal pairing earned a 6-4 victory. Grant Maddox (Greenbrier, Tenn.) and Kyle Burton (Madison, Tenn.) nearly pulled off a win at No. 2 doubles, falling in the tiebreaker by a 7-6 (10-4) final score.

At the top singles slot, Bernal fought for a 7-6 (7-5) win in the first set versus Aaron Jumonville before playing his way to a 6-2 win in the second set.

Burton also battled in a three-set match at No. 4 singles. After dropping the first set, Burton battled back to force a third. He would go on to fall in the tiebreaker of the third set.

TSU will play again tomorrow with another OVC match at Murray State.
