MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tennessee State men’s and women’s tennis teams spent Friday volunteering at Dr. William H. Brewster Elementary School in Memphis, Tenn. Head Coach Monroe Walker III’s squads spent time with Brewster Elementary’s second grade class.

“Hanging out with the kids today was a lot of fun,” TSU men’s tennis sophomore Grant Maddox said. “It was great getting the opportunity to reach out to the generations that follow ours. We each read a few books, passed out candy and shared some laughs together. Being able to read and create a fun atmosphere at this elementary school was great, not only for the children, but for each of us on the team as well.”

The experience proved to be rewarding for the students in the class as well as the student-athletes from TSU’s Tennis program.

“We read stories to the kids and did some activities with them, which was really funny and a great experience at the same time,” TSU women’s tennis freshman Ani Popiashvili said. “Taylor (Patterson) and I tried to give a little lesson in tennis, and they seemed amused, which made us really happy. We had a lot of fun and a great experience.”

The Tigers are in Memphis for a pair of matches on Saturday.
