Tigers Set to take on Vanderbilt

OPENING SERVE: Led by Daniel Bernal (Bogota, Colombia) and Grant Maddox (Greenbrier, Tenn.), who have won seven singles matches apiece, the Tennessee State men’s tennis team makes the short trip across town to take on SEC-opponent Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon.

LAST TIME OUT: The Tigers went 2-0 during the opening weekend with back-to-back 7-0 wins over Arkansas Pine Bluff at Hadley Park. In both matches, TSU won all three doubles matches and followed with six straight-set victories in singles action.

ABOUT VANDERBILT: Coming off a 20-win season and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Vanderbilt is ranked No. 27 in the nation in the most recent ITA rankings. Led by 11th-year head coach Ian Duvenhage, the Commodores are 3-3 on the year with victories over Furman, Lipscomb and Middle Tennessee. Daniel Valent has won a team-best 15 singles matches this season and is 4-0 at the No. 1 singles position.

OVC WINNER: On Feb. 9, it was announced that TSU sophomore Shashank Nautiyal (Delhi, India) had earned Ohio Valley Conference Co-Athlete of the Week. Versus Arkansas Pine Bluff over the weekend, Nautiyal earned two victories in singles and doubles. Both of his singles wins came in straight sets.

UP NEXT: TSU hits the road to face Dayton on Feb. 19 and Northern Kentucky on Feb. 20.
