NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State men’s tennis team picked up its first win of the season this weekend against Alabama A&M, 5-0. The Tigers closed out the week by dropping matches to Murray State and Austin Peay.
On Friday, TSU narrowly fell to the Racers, 4-2, as the sides did not play the doubles matches. Darryl Hale almost staged a comeback at the No. 1 spot, eventually going down, 6-1, 7-5.
Down two points, Daniel Bernal put TSU on the board by defeating his opponent, 6-4, 6-1. Kyle Burton followed by falling in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
For the second straight match, Grant Maddox recorded a victory. This time, he downed his foe easily, 6-1, 6-0.
In Friday’s late match, TSU picked up its first win of the season over HBCU-rival Alabama A&M, 5-0.
Bernal played in the No. 1 slot, and again he scored a victory, 6-4, 6-4. Joseph Daniels won in three sets at No. 2 and then Burton swept his competition, 6-0, 6-0.
Maddox, who moved up to the No. 4 slot, continued his roll by also finishing unblemished before Hale knocked off his foe to complete the shutout.
On Saturday, the Tigers fell to the Govs, 7-0. The doubles point was tightly contested and Bernal came up just short in an unbelievable, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 thriller.
The Tigers will next play at Belmont on Apr. 9.
