Bernal Advances to Quarterfinals at HBCU National Tennis Championships
ATLANTA, Ga.  – Tennessee State sophomore Daniel Bernal advanced to the quarterfinals with a win on day one of the HBCU National Tennis Championships in Atlanta, Ga.
 
Bernal defeated Howard’s William Jones 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 32 to open the 2013-14 season. The Bogota, Columbia native will face A Flight’s #3 seed Daniil Gerasimov of North Carolina Central at 8:30am on Friday morning. Bernal led a trio of Tigers who picked up wins in their first match. Joe Daniels advanced in his first round in the B Flight, but was stopped by #2 Santiago Lobelo from Bethune-Cookman 6-1, 6-2. Daniels is scheduled for an 11:00am meeting with Kahai Hall of Morehouse.
 
In the women’s B Flight, Victoria Haynes earned her first win as a Tiger as she stymied Savannah State’s Angela Bonilla 6-1, 6-2. Haynes was eliminated from the competition as she fell to #4 Maame Osei of Howard 6-1, 6-0.
 
In the men’s C Flight, Jared Asher and Branden McClain were sent to the consolation bracket with opening round losses. Jose Pojasi of Stillman defeated Asher 6-0, 6-4, while Jelffrey Farias, Stillman, dropped McClain 7-6, 6-2. The two Tigers will look to bounce back in the consolation bracket.
 
Attalah Eiland and Trinity Randolph will try to bring home a consolation title after being defeated in the first round on the women’s C Flight. Brandi Nelson of Xavier (La.) got the best of Eiland 6-1, 6-0, while the #2 seed Elysia Ortiz of FAMU won a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Randolph. Eiland will start her consolation journey with Veronika Kalugina of Stillman at 5:30pm. Randolph has advanced to the semifinals and will have to wait for her opponent and time.
