Golf Battled Rains On First Day Of grover Page Invitational
JACKSON, Tenn. – The Tennessee State men’s golf team began the spring portion of its schedule on Monday as part of the 2015 Grover Page Classic, hosted by UT Martin. The 13-team event, held at the Jackson Country Club, was played under overcast and windy conditions for the first round with rain throughout a majority of the second round, growing heavier as the round progressed.
The Tigers struggled out of the gate on the Par-72, 6,783 yard course. TSU shot a 20-over, 308, during the first round, good for ninth and 13 strokes out of eighth. The Tigers would regain a portion of its game as they completed the second round with an 11–over, 299, just nine shots behind eighth place.
Freshman Jermey Fultz (74-75=149) led the way with a 5-over, 149. Fultz is tied for 28th in the 78 player field. Junior Blake Burgett (76-74=150) is one stroke behind Fultz and is tied for 36th.
The Tigers used scores from Fultz, Burgett, James Stepp (76-80=156) and Matt Campbell (82-77=159) during the first round.
Sophomore transfer Todd McGill (83-73=156) turned in the round of the day for TSU with a 1-over, 73, in the afternoon session. McGill was able to cut 10 strokes off of his morning score.
McGill paced the Tigers during the second round and was joined by Burgett, Fultz and Campbell in scoring.
Tomorrow’s final round is scheduled to begin Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
