McGill and Fultz Charge on Day Two
MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The Tennessee State men’s golf team remained in 10th place on day two of the 2015 Ohio Valley Conference golf championships. The Tigers cut ten strokes from day one as they fired an 11-over, 299, at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals on the Par-72, 7,258 yard Fighting Joe course.
Eastern Kentucky holds a two stroke lead over Austin Peay in the team race, while Bendon Caballero of UT Martin and Tomasz Anderson of Jacksonville State share the individual lead at 6-under.
Todd McGill (77-70=147) moved up 11 spots in the standings to 22nd with a 2-under, 70, on Saturday. At 3-over for the tournament, the sophomore is three strokes out of sixth place.
McGill hit 12-of-14 fairways and 14 greens as he recorded a bogey free round. The Knoxville native hit 6-iron to five feet on par-4, 2nd, for the first of two birdies on the front nine. McGill scored his second birdie on the par-4, 4th, as he hit wedge to five feet.
Jermey Fultz (78-71=149) carded a 1-under, 71, and jumped 13 spots to 28th and is two strokes behind McGill. Fultz hit 12 fairways and 12 greens, while collecting six up-and-downs.
Hole No. 4 played well for the Tigers on Saturday as three players scored birdies. Fultz hit a gap wedge to five feet to cut a stroke off his score. The freshman earned his second birdie on the par-5, 12th, as he reached the green in two with a 3-wood to 15 feet and two putted for birdie.
Fultz closed out the day using a 5-iron off the box to 18 feet on the par-3, 18th. Fultz sank the downhill putt to cut his two-day total to 5-over.
The Tigers leader after day one, Matt Campbell (75-78=153) hit 10 fairways and 13 greens as he recorded a 6-over, 78. Campbell found success on No. 4 landing three feet from the pin as he hit an 8-iron from fairway bunker to set up his lone birdie.
James Stepp (79-80=159) posted the final countable score for TSU with 11 fairways and 14 greens. The senior hit 8-iron on par-3, 5th, to 20 feet and buried the putt for birdie.
Andy Stout (83-81=164) registered 13 fairways hits, 10 greens and 34 putts during the second round.
TSU will tee-off with Eastern Illinois at 8:00am on Sunday. Stout will be on the course first and will be followed by Stepp at 8:10am, Campbell at 8:20am, Fultz at 8:30am and McGill at 8:40am.
