Tigers Battle Frigid Final Round of Big Blue Intercollegiate
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The final round of the Big Blue Invitational showed effects of cold temperatures and high winds on all teams on Tuesday morning. After playing the first two rounds with temperatures in the high 70’s, the round three thermometer only reached the mid-40’s with winds reaching as high as 17 MPH. Thus making play at the Par-72, 7,158-yard President’s Reserve Course at the Hermitage Golf Club feel like 27 degrees.
Through the first two rounds 22 team scores, out of 28, were lower than 300. On Tuesday, not one of the 14 teams could break the barrier. Alabama State shot a team-low 301 on Tuesday to finish the tournament in sixth. UT Martin shot a 304 in the final round to claim the team title. The Tigers (291-301-312=904) finished ninth in their final event before the Ohio Valley Conference Championships.
Brandon Caballero (69-67-74=210) took home the individual medalist award. Matt Campbell carded the fourth lowest score of the day with a 2-over, 74, and led TSU over the three rounds at 9-over.
Campbell (74-77-74=225) matched his first round score as he hit 14-of-14 fairways, eight greens and sank four birdies. The junior found the bottom of the cup on 14 and 17 for birdies before going 1-under on back-to-back holes at No. 2 and No. 3. Campbell hit a 56-degree wedge from 88-yards out to five feet on No. 2. The Goodlettsville native knocked down his final birdie on a 12 foot downhill sweeper.
James Stepp (74-76-77=227) carded a 5-over, 77, and was followed by Codie Welborn (70-79-80=229) with an 8-over, 80. Andrew Warner (75-73-81=229) recorded the final countable score for TSU, while Dallas Hill (73-75-86=234) posted the non-countable score.
Shane Sampair (73-80-79=232), playing as an individual, shot a 7-over for the day
The OVC tournament will be held in Muscle Shoals, Ala., from Apr. 25-27.
