Ryan Smith leads the men's golf team to 6th place finish

Jackson, Tenn.--- The Tennessee State University men's golf team placed 6th at the fifth-annual Grover Page Classic hosted by The University of Tennessee at Martin . The classic, played at the par 72, 6,783-yard course, was held at the Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn., from March 13-15.

In a field of 15 teams, Tennessee State shot an overall of 901 (300-303-298). The Tigers were led by senior Ryan Smith who picked up a top 10 finish with an 4-over par 220 overall. Smith tied in 8th place, shooting a 74 in the opening round while carding a 77 and 69 in rounds two and three.

TSU had five other players in the field, including senior Richard Gill who tied for 22nd and shot an 8-over par 224 (77-74-73). Freshman Ryan Pierson tied in 36th carding a 228 (73-78-77). Sophomore Cameron Scitern registered a 233 (76-74-83) for the tournament while freshman Andrew Warner carded 234 (77-78-79),respectively.

Freshman Codie Welborn rounded out the scores for the Tigers with a 237 (80-80-77) overall score.

The Grover Page Classic, which is named after UT Martin's first golf coach who led the program to eight NCAA Championship appearances, was won by Murray State who carded an overall score of 862.

Morehead State finished second registering an 884 overall while Tennessee Tech rounded out the top three carding an 885 overall.

Next, the men will host the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate from April 3-5.
