Men Capture First, Women Place Third at ASU Fall Classic

Montgomery, Ala. - The Tennessee State University golf teams opened the 2009-10 season in fine fashion at the ASU Fall Classic hosted by Alabama State at the Lagoon Park Golf Course on Tuesday (9/15) in Montgomery, Ala.

The men's team rallied back to capture the ASU Classic. TSU, in the 15-team competition, shot 4-over par 576 (289-291 580) after trailing Alabama State after round one. The win marks consecutive tournament wins after TSU won the 2008 PGA Minority Golf National Championship.   Individually, the Tiger golfers finished in the top 17 out of a pool of 77 competitors.

Chris Seibel tied for third overall in the individual standings wrapping up with 1-under par 142 (71-72 141). In round one, Seibel shot one under and made par in the final round.

Ryan Smith made par in the first round finishing with a seventh place tie, shooting 1-over par 142 (72-73 143) overall. Richard Gill followed with a 10th place going two over on the first day but bounced back making par in the final round. In his first outing as a Tiger, Cameron Scitern made par on day one but ended with 3-over par (72-75 147) for 14th place. Dorian Vauls recorded his best finish of his career in 17th place scoring 148 (4-over par).

For the women, TSU ended round one in third place and did not budge in the final team standings. The Tigers finished behind Spring Hill College (338 327 665 +89) and Alabama State (340 342 682 +106).

Jamie Pierce led the way with a second place finish overall. Pierce shot 13-over par 144 ( 78-79 157) after ending round one tied for first.

Marie Black contributed with a 13th place finish shooting 42-over par (92-94 186). Newcomer Kateyln Dingeman followed with the 14th spot going 43 over (95-92 187) and Mya Billingsley rounded off the TSU leader board, scoring 59 over par (99-104 203) placing 21st.

Next up, the men's squad will head to Atlanta, Ga to participate in the Black College Invitational Golf Tournament hosted by the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc. The tourney is scheduled for September 25-27 at the Browns Mill Golf Course.

The women will rejoin men's squad at Austin Peay State's F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate on October 18-20 in Clarksville, Tenn.
