NASHVILLE --- The 2004 golf season will be begin for Tennessee State University at the First Annual Samford Intercollegiate next week (Feb. 23-24). The Tigers are looking forward to the spring season with great anticipation as several key players return for Tiger head coach, Dr. Catana Starks. "After a solid fall, we are expecting good things to happen this spring and are happy to get the season underway," said the Tiger coach. "The work ethic of the players is strength of our team. They have worked hard to make adjustments and improve on their swings. I think we are well-prepared to start the season." Starks will carry a lineup of senior Mark Searle, juniors Robert Dinwiddie, Stu Michaels, Jordan Roberts, and sophomore Phillip Watkins into the first event. The 54-hole event will be held on the Farm Links Golf Course in Fayetteville, Ala., about an hour from Samford's campus in Birmingham. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday with the final round of 18 holes set for Tuesday. Samford is a first-year member of the Ohio Valley Conference. Along with the Bulldogs and Tigers from the OVC, Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee-Martin, and Tennessee Tech will be participating. Rounding out the field will be Birmingham Southern, Cincinnati, Evansville, and Lipscomb. The Tigers will have a break between tournaments. The team's second event of the spring season will be March 22-23 in the New Orleans Methodist SportsCare Intercollegiate.
