OPENING TIP: The fifth-seeded Tennessee State men's basketball team takes on eighth-seeded Morehead State in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana.
TSU'S PATH TO THE OVC CHAMPIONSHIP: The OVC Tournament is a single-elimination format with top two seeds (Belmont and Murray State) receiving double byes to the semifinals. The next two seeds (Austin Peay and Eastern Kentucky) received single byes to the quarterfinals. TSU's path to the championship game is as follows id the Tigers win on each day:
- First Round - Wednesday, March 4 - vs. #8 Morehead State - 6:30 p.m. - ESPN+
- Quarter Finals - Thursday, March 5 - vs. #4 Eastern Kentucky - 6:30 p.m. - ESPN+
- Semifinals - Friday, March 6 - vs. #1 Belmont - 7 p.m. - ESPNU
- Championship - Saturday, March 7 - vs. TBD - 7 p.m. - ESPN2
TOURNAMENT HISTORY: TSU has been a member of the Ohio Valley Conference for 31 seasons and is making its 28th OVC Tournament appearance. The Tigers are 12-25 all time in the OVC Tournament, winning the championship in 1993 and 1994. TSU is looking for its first win at the OVC Tournament since 2013.
ABOUT THE FIELD: TSU is 5-8 against teams that qualified for this year’s OVC Tournament. Of their seven possible opponents, the Tigers have at least one win this season over five of them – all except Belmont and Murray State.
SEEDED FIFTH: When TSU is seeded higher than its opponent, in this case Tennessee State is the fifth seed while Morehead State is the eighth, Big Blue is 7-4 in tournament play. 2011 was the last and only time the Tigers were seeded fifth, and fell to UT Martin that year in round one hosted at the Municipal Auditorium.
ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS MOREHEAD STATE: This marks the 7th meeting in the OVC Tournament between the TSU and MSU. TSU is 4-2 when taking on Morehead State in the tourney. The last time the teams met at the tournament, TSU defeated the Eagles, 59- 53 in the semifinals, to advance to the Championship game, only to fall to No. 1 seed Murray State, 54-52 in 2012. Big Blue is on a two-game win streak over the Eagles when meeting in post-season play.
THIS SEASON VERSUS MOREHEAD STATE: The Tigers are split 1-1 against the Eagles this season, each club garnering wins in their home arenas. TSU defeated MSU, 64-48 in Nashville, while Morehead State beat TSU 66-63 on senior night in Morehead.
