OPENING TIP: The Tennessee State men’s basketball team ends its Kentucky road-trip at Eastern Kentucky Saturday, Feb. 9 with its second game of the season broadcasted on ESPN3. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. CT in McBrayer Arena.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Eastern Kentucky is on a four-game losing streak, dropping its last game to fellow-Nashville team, Belmont, 65-83, and losing to SIUE in double overtime last Saturday. Nick Mayo averages 23.3 points per game, ranking second in the league, and is ranked top 5 in the OVC in five other categories.

LAST TIME OUT:  The Tigers improved to 8-15, 5-6 in OVC play after fighting through a double overtime win over Morehead State, 81-80. The Tigers went into halftime of its play at Johnson Arena, down two, 40-38, hoping to repay the Eagles for defeating TSU at home. Big Blue fought back to lead by eight with just 4:02 left in regulation. However, the Tigers were only able to contribute two free throws in those final minutes, providing MSU ample opportunity to come back with three trips to the charity stripe and a soaring three-pointer by A.J. Hicks, the night’s leading scorer (29). Big Blue won with big defensive stops in the second overtime. period. 

ALL-TIME SERIES: Big Blue won its first Ohio Valley Conference game versus the Colonels at home this season, moving them to 30-34 in the all-time series.

The Tigers are 14-16 when playing the Colonels in Richmond. TSU has gone into overtime three times in the series, and are 2-1 when doing so. Under the only two first-year coaches in the OVC, the series stands at 1-0.

LAST MATCHUP WITH EASTERN KENTUCKY: The Tennessee State men’s basketball team won its first Ohio Valley Conference game defeating the Eastern Kentucky Colonels, 82-81.

The win snaped a six-game losing streak for the Tigers, and marked the first conference win under head coach Brian “Penny” Collins. Tennessee State fought back from a small seven-point deficit at the half, leading for just 3:57 of the game – 2:39 of which was in the second period. Five TSU players scored in double digits for the second time this season, shooting 50 percent from the field, 92.9 percent from the free throw line.

NATIONALLY RANKED: The Tigers are ranked top 100 in the nation in three categories:

  •  41 in turnovers forced
    • 26 vs. Carver and at Memphis
  • 47 in steals per game
    • double-digit steals in six games this season
  • 64 in total steals
    •  176 steals on the season
