OPENING TIP: The Tennessee State men’s basketball team heads to Akron, Ohio to take on the Zips in stop one of its second multi-game road swing, Dec. 18 with tip-off on ESPN+ at 6 p.m. CT. 

LAST TIME OUT: TSU took a pit stop after over a month on the road at the Gentry Center as the Tigers hosted the North Carolina A&T Aggies Saturday, Dec. 15.

Tied with 00:42 seconds left in the half, Stokley Chaffee, Jr. hit his third free throw of the night, to put TSU up 76-75. The Aggies’ Kameron Langley went up for a layup to take the lead. A one point game with only seven seconds left on the clock, TSU fouled bringing Copeland, who was 1-of-2 on the night, to the charity stripe. The junior guard missed the first, but made the second. With the clock expiring, TSU attempted a half-court shot as time ran out for a final of 78-76.

ALL-TIME SERIES: This serves as the 6th meeting between the Tigers and the Zips, and the first in over a decade. In the all-time series against Akron, TSU is 2-3with the last meeting at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska, Nov. 18, 2007. Tennessee State trailed the Akron Zips by 10 points, 38-28, at halftime. Big Blue mounted a second half rally outscoring Akron 44-36, but lost the game 74-72 on a jumper with 0:04 remaining.

The first three meetings were in tournament play. TSU leads the tournament series against Akron 2-1. 

In games at Akron, the Zips lead 0-1. 

NATIONALLY RANKED: The Tigers are ranked top 50 in the nation in two categories:

  • 38 in turnovers forced
  • 44 in in three-point field goal defense
