OPENING TIP: The Tennessee State men’s basketball team wraps up regular season action at Belmont on Saturday with a 5 p.m. tipoff at the Curb Event Center in Nashville. The Tigers have won four of their last five overall and are 10-6 in games away from the Gentry Center this season.
OVC TOURNAMENT PICTURE: The Tigers are in the eight-team field for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. TSU can finish as high as fourth in the final standings and as low as eighth depending on results around the league.
LAST TIME OUT: In the final home game of the regular season, TSU earned a 68-66 win over EKU on Feb. 18. With the game tied at 57-57 with 1:23 left, Tahjere McCall (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored five-consecutive points for TSU. McCall finished with 20 points and set the TSU single-season steals record on the night. The Tigers held a 36-22 rebounding edge and outscored the Colonels in the paint by a 36-14 margin.
ABOUT BELMONT: The Bruins have secured the Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship with a 14-1 league record entering Saturday. Reigning OVC player of the Year Evan Bradds leads Belmont with 20.7 points per game.
LAST TIME VERSUS BELMONT: TSU fell by a 93-76 margin to Belmont in the first meeting on Jan. 28 at the Gentry Center. TSU was led by 22 points from Tahjere McCall (Philadelphia, Pa.) to go with 18 from Wayne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Five players scored in double figures for Belmont, which shot 61.2 percent from the field on the night.
ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS BELMONT: The Tigers are 11-16 in the all-time series versus Belmont. The Tigers and Bruins split last year’s series with both teams winning at home. TSU’s last road win against the Bruins came on Dec. 8, 1979 by a 67-65 final score with the Tigers falling in the last six trips to Belmont.
