Tigers' regular season finale ends in victory over Eastern Illinois

Nashville, Tenn. - The Tigers wrapped up the 2010-11 season carrying Tennessee State University over Eastern Illinois in conference play, 66-62, at the Gentry Center on Saturday night.

TSU (14-15, 10-8 OVC) ends a three-game drought to the Panthers and remains the fifth seed for the upcoming 2011 OVC Basketball Tournament next week.

The Tigers picked up their third straight victory to close out the regular season. Despite shooting a season-low, 32 percent from the floor, four players managed to score in double figures.

Robert Covington posted his eighth double-double of the season, tenth of his career, with 22 points and 11 boards. He shot 6-of-15 from the field, including 3-of-4 from the arc while going 7-of-8 from the line.

Wil Peters and Kenny Moore matched their efforts adding 11 points and three assists each. Patrick Miller chipped in 10 points and two steals. Moore also finished with nine rebounds.

TSU trailed 35-32 at the break but took their first lead in the second half with 5:09 remaining, 56-52. With the score tied at 58 with 3:53 left, TSU outscored EIU, 8-4, in the final three minutes of the game.

After the score was knotted up, the Tigers tallied all of their points from the line, hitting 8-of-11, while holding EIU to 2-of-8 shooting to close out the game.

EIU (9-20, 4-14 OVC) ends their season winning one of their last 11 games while dropping their second straight. They shot 40 percent from the field and evened the Tigers on the boards with 39.

Curry McKinney scored a team-high 19 points and James Hollowell finished 7-of-14 for 14 points. Jeremy Granger dished out a game high six assists to go with nine points.

Next, the Tigers will meet Tennessee Martin in the first round of the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Tournament. The match-up will take place on Wednesday, March 2, at 6 p.m. at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn.
