Sain and Nobles receive conference honors

Nashville, Tenn. - Tennessee State University basketball players Jacquan Nobles and Josh Sain received Ohio Valley Conference honors for the week of Jan. 18.

Sain was named Co-OVC Newcomer of the Week along with Murray State's B.J. Jenkins and Nobles was tagged the conference's freshman of the week. Both guards received the weekly award despite the Tigers dropping both games last week.

Sain, a 6-5 junior guard/forward from Jackson, Tenn., picks up his fourth newcomer of the week title and continues to lead TSU in scoring with 15.4 points per game. In two games last week, he averaged 19.5 ppg, scoring in double figures in each game.

Against Iowa (1/12), he scored 19 points, hitting 4-of-9 from three-point range (.444) and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. His best performance came at Austin Peay where he tied a game-high 20 points on 8-of-17 from the floor (.471) and 3-of-7 from long range (.429). He also pulled down eight rebounds with two assists and one steal.

Nobles is a 6-4 freshman guard from Greenville, NC. In two games this week, Nobles came off the bench to average 17.0 ppg. At Iowa he scored 14 points, hitting 4-of-9 from the field (.444), 3-of-8 from beyond the arc (.375) and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe (.750).

His top performance came at Austin Peay when he tied a game-high 20 points with Sain. He hit 7-of-14 from the field (.500) and 4-of-8 from long range.

In the first half he scored 16 points on 6-of-7 from the field (.857) and 4-of-5 from three-point range (.800). Entering the game off the bench with TSU down 20-9 (11:39) Nobles led the Tigers to a 42-38 first half lead (33-18 run). He currently is second on the team in scoring with 10.3 ppg.

The Tigers will continue OVC play when they head to Jacksonville, Ala. to match-up with Jacksonville State. The game is slated for Thursday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPNU.
