Tigers Hold Off Tennessee Tech for 77-74 Win

Tigers survive in Cookeville for third straight win and OVC playoff berth. 

Cookeville, Tenn. – Gerald Robinson, Jr. finished with 19 points, including 15 in the second half, as the Tigers held off a last minute comeback by Tennessee Tech for a 77-74 conference win in the Eblen Center Thursday night.

The win gives TSU their third straight road win, their longest winning streak of the season and clinches an Ohio Valley Conference Tournament berth.

Jerrell Houston scored 17 points (6-of-9) and Darius Cox (5-of-9) tallied a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to help TSU shoot 48 percent from the floor.

The Tigers (9-17, 7-9 OVC) held their largest lead of the game in the first half, 30-15, with 8:55 on the clock. Tennessee Tech (11-16, 5-12 OVC) fought back with a 16-6 run to narrow the gap, 36-31, at the break.

TTU shot 41 percent from the field and 83 percent from the charity stripe. Three Golden Eagles scored in double figures, Kevin Murphy scored a team high 19 points while Frank Davis added 17 and Daniel Northern 12.

The Tigers opened the second half with a 14-7 run for a 52-40 lead at the 15:50 mark. TTU brought the game into single digit, 67-60, (4:01) and knotted the game up with a 7-0 run, 67-67, with 2:11 on the clock.

With 10 seconds left, a Davis three-pointer gave TTU hope, but the Tigers held the advantage, 76-74. TSU shot 5-of-7 from the free-throw line with less than a minute and a desperation three-point shot by TTU rimmed out to seal the Tigers' win.

Next, TSU will host the University of Detroit in the ESPNU Bracketbusters match-up on Saturday. February 21st. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
