NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State junior basketball player Clarence Matthews has received his third weekly honors for the Ohio Valley Conference this season as he has been named OVC Newcomer of the Week. Matthews, who was OVC Newcomer of the Week in December and OVC Player of the Week on Jan. 23, has ran the streak three consecutive week that a TSU player has received a weekly awards as selected by the league's sporyts information directors. Kareem Grant was last week's OVC Player of the Week, following Matthews to receive the award. A 6-7, 250-pound forward from Beaumont, Texas, Matthews became the first OVC player to record double-doubles in three consecutive games this season, heading up Tennessee State's efforts with 48 points and 36 rebounds on the week. A 22-point, 14-board performance against Samford was a highlight. Matthews shot 47.4 percent from the floor (18-of-38) and 60 percent at the free throw line (12-of-20) during the three-game span. Matthews, who now has a league-high six double-doubles, also finished with seven blocks, six steals and five assists.
