NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State junior forward Clarence Matthews has been honored as the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performance in two Tigers victories last week. Matthews, a 6-7, 250-pound player is in his first season with the Tigers and has been previously honored as the OVC Newcomer of the Week this season. Matthews played a big role in TSU's home wins over Southeast Missouri (68-63) and Eastern Illinois (73-57). Matthews averaged 22.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in the victories. Against Southeast Missouri, he recorded a 16-point, six-rebound effort and followed with a double-double performance of 28 points and 10 boards against Eastern Illinois on Saturday night. A native of Beaumont, Texas, Matthews was near-perfect in the EIU contest, converting 8-of-9 tries from the field and 12-of-13 attempts from the free throw line. For the week, Matthews shot 68.2 percent from the floor and 82.4 percent at the charity stripe while also registering four blocked shots, two steals and an assist. The OVC announces weekly awards each Monday evening during the course of the season.
