100 Moments: TSU Storms Through Atlanta

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by remembering a key game from Big Blue's last OVC Championship football season.

On Sept. 18, 1999 the Tigers traveled to Atlanta to take on FAMU in the Georgia Dome. The Tigers were 2-0 at the time, and fresh off of an OVC title the year before. TSU came into the game ranked in the top-25 and defeated the Rattlers 42-25.

The Tigers started quickly, and scored the first 25 points of the game on the backs of two touchdown passes and a pair of fumble recoveries.

The play of quarterback Leon Murray was the story of the day as he threw for 345 yards while completing 62.5 percent of his passes.

Meanwhile, FAMU couldn't find a quarterback that could keep up with Murray. Two quarterbacks attempted a total of 51 passes, but both were credited with an interception.

Finally, FAMU got on the board with a field goal with 3:47 left in the first half. However, TSU marched right down the field and scored another touchdown on a 49-yard bomb from Murray to Julius Hull.

Hull also had a career day for Big Blue. He had five catches for 175 yards and three touchdowns.

Down 32-3 at halftime, Florida A&M showed some fight with 15 points off of two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough.

TSU iced the cake with a 57-yard touchdown with 4:29 left in the game. Murray dropped back to pass, and hit Hull again to make the score 41-25. A point-after-touchdown later gave Tennessee State a 17-point victory.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
