Nashville, Tenn. - Tennessee State University return specialist Weldon Garlington was named to the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS Punt Returner Award watch list on Monday.
Garlington, a sophomore from Antioch, returned nine punts for 19.4 yards per contest. Against Southeast Missouri last season, Garlington carried back a 91-yard punt for a touchdown. Later that week, he was named the CFPA FCS National Punter Returner of the Week.
Earlier in the season, the speedy athlete became the fourth TSU player to return a kick the full length of the field. Garlington managed a 100-yard touchdown against Austin Peay, the first since Avion Black in 1999. Black was named the CFPA FCS National Kickoff Returner of the Week. Garlington ranked 94th nationally last season with 20.9 yards per kick return.
The CFPA watch list is a rough guide, highlighting returning players with strong individual performances. Garlington joins two other TSU athletes that were named to the CFPA watch list. Trabis Ward was named to the running back watch list, while Jamin Godfrey earned a spot on the placekicker list.
TSU football student-athletes report on Saturday, Aug. 4 with the first day of camp practice scheduled for Monday, Aug. 6.
