100 Moments: Tigers Pull Off the Upset

With the Tigers set to host No. 16 ranked Eastern Kentucky this weekend, the 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by re-living the last time that Tennessee State upset a nationally ranked team.

On Oct. 15 of last season, the Tigers traveled to Cookeville, Tenn. to take on the No. 19 ranked Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. TTU came into the game sporting a 4-1 record, but came away with a two-point devastating loss.

To start the contest, linebacker Rico Council recovered a Tennessee Tech fumble to give the Tigers prime field position. The Tigers responded with a three play drive. Quarterback Michael German connected with Jeremy Pryor with a 12-yard pass to put TSU up 7-0 with 13:51 left in the first quarter.

German finished the game with 19 completions for 232 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Tigers struck again on their next offensive possession with a 10-play drive that culminated with a 27-yard touchdown pass from German to receiver Devin Wilson. The score gave the Tigers a commanding 14-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles would not go down without a fight however, and they started playing like the No. 19 ranked team in the country. TTU scored touchdowns on the team's following two possessions to tie the game with almost an entire quarter to play in the first half.

The Tigers responded on their next drive and recaptured the lead. First, German threw a 48-yard pass to Calvin McNairl that put the Tigers in prime field position. Then, Dante'Thomas rushed in for a one-yard touchdown to put the Tigers up 21-14 with 13:26 left in the half.

After a TTU field goal, TSU scored another touchdown as the Tigers converted on three third downs to set up a three yard rushing touchdown by Trabis Ward.

Another TTU field goal put the score at 28-20 in favor of the Tigers heading into halftime and it seemed as though TSU might just be able to spring the upset. The feelings continued when German and Thomas both scored rushing touchdowns to make the score 42-20.

Slowly, the Golden Eagles got back into the game as they scored on four of their next five possessions. First they scored another field goal, and then another touchdown. TTU's kicker finally missed a field goal, but the team then added ten more points to cut the Tiger lead to two.

TSU finally stopped the Golden Eagles' run when TTU was called for a penalty on the ensuing onside kick. The Tigers let Tennessee Tech back into the game, but they played strong to start the game, and buckled down when they had to.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
