Tennessee State redshirt freshman quarterback Michael German was named adidas Ohio Valley Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week on Sunday after his 300-yard passing performance at Austin Peay.
German, a native of Pompano Beach, Fla., completed 21-of-26 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns. He became the first Tigers quarterback to reach 300-plus yards since Shannon Harris on Nov. 22, 2001. German shared this week's award with Jacksonville State's Washaun Ealey.
His completion percentage of 80.7 was the second-best performance all-time at TSU and the first since quarterback Antonio Heffner threw 79.3 percent in 2008.
German threw two deep passes for 67 and 43 yards, including two passes to himself in the first half. This season, German has completed 37 passes for 619 yards and four touchdowns in four games. He has not thrown an interception in 68 pass attempts.
The freshman is the second TSU student-athlete to earn weekly OVC honors. Travis James was named OVC Specialist of the Week on Sept. 12.
Tennessee State returns home to LP Field on Saturday, Oct. 8 when the Tigers host Southeast Missouri State. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
