Blue Team Prevails 61-37 Over White In Spring Game
On a sunny and festive day that saw over 3,500 fans and the "Aristocrat of Bands" come to "The Hole" of Hale Stadium, the Tennessee State University "Blue" team (offense) prevailed 61-37 over the "White" team (defense) in the 2011 Spring game.
Utilizing a point system that rewarded the defense points for such things as interceptions, fumbles and third down stops, the defense took a 25-21 lead into the halftime. The defense gained fifteen points on three interceptions alone as they stymied the offensive attack.
In the second half, however, the offense came alive scoring thirty points on two touchdowns and a field goal along with gaining scoring points on several plays over twenty yards. Key among the 20-plus yard plays were long pass receptions by Brandon Brown (49 yds) and Travis James (30 yds).
Quarterback duties were split among senior Jeremy Perry and redshirt freshman Michael German who combined for 270 yards in passing. Perry's worksheet was 9-14-1 with 3 TDs for 154 yards and a long of 46 yards. German tossed 8-19-2 for 116 yards, with no TDs and a long of 30 yards.
Several running backs had good performances with the top showing coming from redshirt sophomore Trabis Ward , who had 11 carries for 69 yards with a long of 12 yards. Sophomore DeMarco Thomas had a good performance gaining 66 yard on three carries with a long of 40.
No less than five receivers showed promise snaring 17 of the 33 passes thrown in their direction. Top performer in the Spring game was redshirt freshman Brandon Brown who caught five passes for 115 yards, with a longs of 49 and 46 yards. Jamal Ramsey , Johntae Gleaves and Devin Wilson had touchdown receptions of 28, 16 and 8 yards respectively.
The game was preceded by the second annual "Legends" flag football game, where past players returned show that they still football skills. In that game, quarterback Derek Quarles (1995-96)led the Blue team to an 18-0 win over the White. Quarles tossed two TD passes to Wiley Doughty and David Daniels (1980-84) intercepted a Brian Ransom pass. Daniels pitched his pick to Joe Stone (1987-89) who scored the final TD.
The Tigers will open the 2011 season on September 3rd against Southern University in the John Merritt Classic.
