TSU Football Golf Tourney a huge hit

Nashville, Tenn. - Tennessee State University Football hosted the 2011 TSU Tee Off with the Tigers Golf Tournament on Friday at the Ted Rhodes Golf Course.

In its second year, the event accommodated alumni, corporate sponsors, community members and TSU administration who were on hand in support of the Tigers' upcoming season.

"The tournament went really well because we had a great turn-out " said TSU Football head coach Rod Reed. "We can always do it bigger and better, so we look forward to doing it again next year."

The tournament consisted of 18 teams in a four-person scramble playing 18 holes on the par-72 course.

A scramble, which is one of the primary forms of tournament play for charity and sponsor events, is usually played with each player teeing off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The better of the second shots is determined, and then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed.

Bestway Janitorial Services picked up the first-place award with the group of Willie Sales, Joe Riggins, Lawrence Haywood, and Greg Renfro shooting a 54 . Tennessee Quick Cash carded in second place with a score of 57 while Boundary Restaurant registered a 59 to place third.

Individual contests were played with Lorenzo Muhammed (Maurice Vanderbilt) winning the Closest to the 15th Hole competition with Greg Renfro (Bestway Janitorial Services) scoring the longest drive at the 16th and David Hood (Tennessee Quick Cash) hitting the longest on the 10th.

The event was capped off with a lunch buffet, awards ceremony, and a raffle for door prizes and giveaways.

The Tigers will open the 2011 season against Southern University in the John Merritt Classic on September 3, 2011. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
