Veterans Steady Tigers In Preseason Camp

Tennessee State University head football coach, James Webster, says he was pleased with his team’s progress after a live scrimmage on Saturday (8/10), marking the end of the Tigers’ first week of practice.

“I am very happy with our progress at this point of our preseason practice,” said Webster. “We have a core of veteran players, and their leadership has allowed us to implement practice plans seamlessly.”

Following the scrimmage, Webster gave the following observations in his assessment of the Tigers’ first week:

  • TSU has excellent depth on both sides of the ball
  • Offense is stocked with veterans and has performed well during early practice
  • Defensive line is relatively inexperienced, freshmen and new players will “have” to play, some may start.

On the injury front, the Tigers have finished the first week with no major injuries. Webster says, “We have the normal bumps, bruises and sprains, but nothing major.” Several first team players were held out of Saturday’s scrimmage with hamstring and groin pulls, but Webster says it was only for precautionary reasons.

Webster took time to commend his team for their “tremendous focus” during their first week of practice. “We had a team, no family, tragedy this week,” said Webster, with the untimely passing of our former teammate Qudus (Adeboyejo).” He continued, “These kids stayed focused on our goal, to prepare for the upcoming season, even with the loss of their friend and teammate and worked hard in every session this week.” The team held a private memorial service at the Saturday morning practice for Qudus to “bring closure” to his passing.

Coach Webster concluded his remarks stating that he was extremely pleased with the additions of his new players, freshmen and transfers. He says, “we have tremendous talent at the quarterback position ... no controversy ... just great talent and tremendous competition.”

The Tigers open their season on Saturday, August 30th at Alabama A&M in Normal, Alabama. The game will be played at the Bulldogs’ Louis Crews Stadium, with kickoff slated for 6:00p .
