Youngsters Shine For Tigers in Spring Game
Saturday, April 12, 2008

Newcomers showed promise in Saturday’s spring football game.

Over two thousand Tiger fans attending “Triple Play” Saturday (4/12) witnessed the TSU White offense score a 36-22 win over the TSU Blue defense.

Although the game used a scoring system that awarded points to the defense and offense for situational plays, (i.e. stopping third downs or gaining first downs) there were two traditional touchdowns in the contest. After a close scoring first half, 13-11, defense, the white team scored with :04 remaining in the half on a 47 yard Zach Motley to Jonathan Moore TD pass. Motley is a redshirt freshman from Chicago and Moore is a sophomore from Nashville.

In the second half, the offense steadily picked up points rushing the ball in big chunks, when late in the quarter newcomer, Donte Thomas broke up the middle for a 20 yd TD run. Thomas is a freshman from Dallas, Texas.
Offensive numbers from the game show Thomas as the leading rusher with 58 yards on 20 carries, quarterback Zach Motley gained 39 yards on six carries. Jonathan Moore caught three passes for 67 yards and Ronald Evans gained 42 yards on two receptions.

Quarterback Calvin McNairl completed 8-of-13 passes for 96 yards and Motley completed 5-of-8 for 91 yards. Starting QB Antonio Hefner and RB Javarris Williams did not dress out for the spring game as coach James Webster chose to look at his young players progress in this game.
