NASHVILLE - The Tennessee State University Athletics Department will hold a news conference on Tuesday, Aug. 17, at 1 p.m. in the Kean Hall lobby, located in the Floyd-Payne Campus Center on the university's main campus. The conference will feature TSU football head coach James Reese, along with TSU athletics director Teresa Phillips and Alabama A&M athletics director James Martin Sr. "This year's John Merritt Classic will be an excellent way to start off our football season," Phillips said. "This game against Alabama A&M promises to be a hard-fought contest to remember. And we thought the best way to start off the public countdown to the game and our season was a gathering of the two schools." Along with the football representatives, TSU athletics will be announcing sponsors for the upcoming season, which include a partnership with Comcast Communications valued at more than $100,000. Other sponsors that will be announced include Coca-Cola Bottling, State Farm Insurance and Anheuser-Busch. Representatives from the sponsors will also be in attendance at the news conference. "These companies have entered into partnerships with TSU athletics that will strengthen both the university and their organizations," said Carl Pillow, assistant athletics director for operations. The Sixth John Merritt Classic will be held Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 3-5. The weekend kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 2, with the football seniors kick-off luncheon at 11 a.m. at Millennium Maxwell House Hotel and ends with the Classic concert, featuring 8-Ball & MJG, Lil Wayne, and Young Bloodz on Sunday, Sept. 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Gentry Center. *********** John Merritt Classic Event Schedule Thursday, September 2 Football Seniors Kick-Off Luncheon 11 a.m., Millennium Maxwell House Hotel For reservations call (615) 963-5861 Classic Fashion Show 7 p.m., TSU Kean Hall Gymnasium Free Admission Classic Student Dance 9 p.m., TSU Gentry Center Free Admission with ID For TSU and Alabama A&M students Friday, September 3 Classic Coaches Luncheon 11 a.m., Millennium Maxwell House Hotel Admission $25.
