NASHVILLE --- Six Tennessee State track and field student-athletes qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round scheduled for May 25-27 in Lexington, Ky., it was announced by the NCAA on Thursday.
The top 12 finishers in each event from the two regions will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. on June 7-10. The Preliminary round is broken up into East (Lexington, Ky.) and West (Austin, Texas.) regions.
The NCAA Selection Committee accepted the top-48 performers in each individual event and the top-24 relay teams in both relays to compete at each site hosting the NCAA Preliminary Rounds for a total of 96 individuals and 48 relays competing nationwide.
All-American Amber Hughes (Atlanta, Ga.) will compete for the Tigerbelles in the 100m hurdles and the triple jump at the competition. Fellow senior Crystal Williams (Gainesville, Fla.) will run alongside Hughes in the 100m hurdles, while junior Cyra Beard (Jackson, Tenn.) will take part in the high jump.
For the Flying Tigers, a trio of seniors in Kareem Nicholas (Atlanta, Ga.), Quamel Prince (Nashville, Tenn.) and Kyle Washington-Scott (St. Louis, Mo.) qualified for this year’s NCAA East Preliminary Round. In field events, Nicholas will participate in the long jump with Washington-Scott competing in the shot put. Prince will run in the 800m for TSU.
