STARTING LINE: The Tennessee State women’s track and field team looks to defend its Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championship title as TSU hosts the Championship on May 13-14 at Edward S. Temple Track. The Tigerbelles also won the OVC Indoor Championship this season.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: The TSU women’s program has won the OVC Outdoor Championship four times (2001, 2002, 2008, 2015). Winning this year’s championship would give TSU back-to-back outdoor titles for the second time in school history and first since accomplishing the feat in 2001 and 2002.
AT LAST YEAR’S EVENT: TSU won last year’s OVC Outdoor Championship with 128.5 points, finishing just ahead of Eastern Illinois in second place with 127 points. Earning Athlete of the Championship, Amber Hughes (Atlanta, Ga.) won the 100m hurdles (13.27), 200m (23.66) and the triple jump (12.90m – 42’4”). Adding individual titles were Kayla Pryor (Ellenwood, Ga.) in the 400m hurdles (1:00.18), Clairwin Dameus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) in the heptathlon (5,396 points) and I’mani Davis (Tulsa, Okla.) in the high jump (1.73m – 5’8”). In the 4x400m relay, Hughes and Kayla Pryor teamed with Diera Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Christian Pryor (Ellenwood, Ga.) to claim gold with a 3:44.96 finish. TSU Head Coach Chandra Cheeseborough-Guice earned OVC Coach of the Year for her team’s success.
USA: With a distance of 13.46m (44’2”) in the triple jump at the Memphis Invitational, Amber Hughes (Atlanta, Ga.) made the Olympic Trial Standard for the US Olympic Team. The trials are scheduled for July 1-10 in Eugene, Ore.
