STARTING LINE: The Tennessee State women’s track and field team makes the short trip to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to take part in Saturday’s MTSU Invitational. The Tigerbelles will get a good look at teams from the Ohio Valley Conference and have one more meet next week to prepare for the OVC Indoor Championship on Feb. 26-27.
ABOUT THE FIELD: The women’s field includes TSU, Austin Peay, Middle Tennessee, Eastern Kentucky, Belmont and Chattanooga.
LAST TIME OUT: The Tigerbelles were last in action on Jan. 22-23 in Bloomington, Ind. at the Gladstein Invitational. Competing in the pentathlon for the first time this indoor season, Clairwin Dameus set a new personal record with 3,898 points. The senior won the long jump and 60m hurdles as part of the pentathlon.
Amber Hughes also came away victorious in the triple jump (13.29m) and set a personal best in the 60m hurdles (8.33). Crystal Williams had a strong showing in the 60m hurdles (8.63), while Amber Townsend took fifth in the triple jump (12.08m) and Sharmil Whyatt tied for sixth in the high jump (1.63m).
OVC AWARDS: Amber Hughes has been dominating the OVC weekly honors with three awards to her credit already this year. She won Adidas OVC Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 13 then followed up with Track Athlete of the Week honors on Jan. 20 and 27. Clairwin Dameus has also had her fair share of attention with two Adidas OVC Field Athlete of the Week awards so far this indoor season.
UP NEXT: The Tigerbelles travel to Birmingham, Ala. for the Samford Invitational on Feb. 12-13.
