SEASON OPENER: The Tennessee State women’s track and field team officially opens the 2015-16 indoor season with the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener on Saturday, Dec. 5. Field events get underway at 10:30 a.m., followed by the running events at 1 p.m. TSU held its annual Blue & White Meet on Nov. 19 to unofficially kick off another season. The Tigerbelles are the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Champions.
AT LAST YEAR’S EVENT: In last year’s season opener at Vanderbilt, the Tigerbelles turned in a number of strong performances highlighted by Amber Hughes winning the 60m hurdles in 8.56. Clairwin Dameus took third place in the long jump with a distance of 5.93m, while Angel Davis also took third in the shot put with a mark of 13.47m. In her first collegiate meet, Christian Pryor also had a strong showing to take fourth in the 600m (1:38.27).
THE RETURNERS: The Tigerbelles welcome back multiple student-athletes who won OVC medals a year ago during the indoor season. Clairwin Dameus took gold in the long jump and pentathlon to go with a bronze in the 60m hurdles, while Amber Hughes captured gold in the triple jump, silver in the 60m hurdles and bronze in the 200m. In the 4x400m relay, Dameus and Hughes teamed with Christian and Kayla Pryor to take first place.
THE NEWCOMERS: Seven new freshmen joined the Tigerbelles this season. Five of them are from the state of Georgia, one is from Florida and one is from Texas.
THE STAFF: U.S. Track and Field legend and TSU alum Chandra Cheeseborough-Guice has won eight Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year Awards. Cheeseborough-Guice returns her two assistant coaches in Asha Gibson and David Rachel and is assisted by two graduate assistants, Effua Ampadu and Julian Mallory.
THE SCHEDULE: Five of TSU’s indoor meets will be held in the state of Tennessee, including the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championship at the Wilma Rudolph Indoor Track inside the Gentry Center. The Vanderbilt Season Opener will be one of two trips to the SEC school’s indoor facility for the Tigerbelles with the Jan. 15-16 Commodore Indoor Invitational still on the schedule.
UP NEXT: Tennessee State will host the Ed Temple Classic on Sunday, Jan. 10 at the Gentry Center.
