TENNESSEE STATE vs. CUMBERLAND

SETTING THE STAGE:
The TSU women’s tennis team will take on Cumberland for the second consecutive home match on Thursday at Hadley Park. After winning its first four matches of the season the Tigers look to improve to 5-0.
LAST TIME OUT:
Taylor Patterson and Ashia Jones picked up a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles, and Pragati Natraj and Abhilasha Vishwanath earned an identical 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles. The third doubles match consisted of Ani Popiashvili and Phyllicia Hemphill who went on to capture the doubles sweep with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
Playing at the top single slot, Popiashvili was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Shaneka Hubbard. The other five singles matches went to TSU by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Patterson defeated Rita Gyasi at No. 2 6-1, 6-0, while Jones picked up her third singles win this season. Vishwanath, Natraj, and Hemphill won by the same 6-0, 6-0 scores in their matches at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
In the second match of the day the Tigers went on to win 6-0 in singles. Four Tigers won by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Popiashvili and Vishwanath were two of the four players winning by that score at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Hemphill and Natraj also did not lose a game at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Patterson and Jones would drop a game in the first set before winning 6-1 and going on to win the second set 6-0.
The Phoenix sport an (0-1) record losing 5-0 to Georgia Gwinnett. Ainhoa Garjio Garrido played at No.1 for Cumberland. The head coach is Norman Kalkhoff who enters his first season with the team.
The Tigers will head to Memphis to take on Arkansas Pine Bluff, Rhodes College, and LeMoyne-Owen on Mar. 3 and 4.
