NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State women’s tennis team lost its Ohio Valley Conference opener to Jacksonville State by a 7-0 final score on Saturday afternoon at Hadley Park.

“I was disappointed in the women’s play today,” TSU Head Coach Monroe Walker III said. “I don’t know if it was the weather or what, but our energy level was low. We played a lot of close matches, but close doesn’t count unless you’re playing horseshoes. Ani (Popiashvili) played a good match, but overall, I hope we can learn and get better.”

Jacksonville State (4-12, 2-1 OVC) led TSU (6-3, 0-1 OVC) wire-to-wire, earning the doubles point before taking all six singles matches in straight sets.

Freshman Ani Popiashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) played a tightly-contested match at No. 1 singles, falling to Olivia Nguyen, 6-4, 7-5.  In another back-and-forth match, junior Taylor Patterson (Munford, Tenn.) was handed a 6-3, 7-6 loss by Courtney Conley at No. 5 singles.

Next week during a three-day span, TSU hosts four matches at home versus Belmont (March 24), Morehead State (March 25), Eastern Kentucky (March 26) and Fisk (March 26).
