Clarksville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University men and women's tennis teams fell 7-0 to Austin Peay State in OVC play on Wednesday (4/7).
The Tigers women move to 0-9 (0-8 OVC) and the men drop to 0-7 (0-6 OVC). The Lady Govs improve to 14-3 (7-1 OVC) and the Governors move to 4-5 (1-4 OVC).
For the women, TSU picked up one set when Meagan Haynes (0-9, 0-8 OVC) was defeated by Vanja Tomic (13-2, 7-0 OVC), 6-0, 6-1. In No.1 singles.
Penelope Johnson moved to the No. 2 spot playing her first match of the season as the No. 2 seed. Johnson (1-8, 0-8 OVC) dropped, 6-0, 6-0, to Carolin Weikard (11-3, 6-1 OVC).
In doubles, Haynes and Johnson fell 8-1 to Tomic and Mariana Pagan (13-2, 7-0 OVC) in the No.1 match-up. TSU relinquished the point dropping the No.2 and No.3 matches 8-0.
On the men side in doubles competition, Lawrence Washington and Justin Hamm (0-7, 0-6 OVC) gave a valiant effort but came up short, 8-5, against Sean Bailey and Henriquez Norbiato (11-3, 4-1 OVC). Aaron Fields and Austin Fields started strong but could not hold on dropping the No.2 match to John Storie and Leonardo Locatelli, 8-3.
In the top singles matches, Washington (1-6, 0-6 OVC) fell to Bailey (7-7, 2-4 OVC), 6-0, 6-0, at No.1 and Hamm dropped 6-1, 6-0, to Locatelli (9-4, 3-2 OVC).
Next up, Tiger Tennis will travel to Cookeville, Tenn. to play Tennessee Tech in a rescheduled OVC match-up on Friday, April 9th, at 2 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for Monday (4/12) at 11 a.m.
TTU's men host (8-4, 5-1 OVC) with a 4-1 record at home while winning three straight including five of the last six with a 6-1 win over Morehead State (4/6). The Golden Eagles were picked to finish third in the OVC preseason poll.
The women (2-12, 1-7 OVC) are 1-5 at home dropping their last two matches, 5-2, to Murray State (4/3) and Morehead State (4/6). They were picked in the conference during the preseason to finish fifth.
The Golden Eagles' top female single's player is Victoria Cran (13-7, 5-3 OVC). In doubles, Cran joins Frederike Kahl (7-8, 2-6 OVC) as the No.1 doubles pair.
The men enter with six players posting winning records in singles play which include: Alex Chen (13-9, 5-1 OVC), Josh Girling (14-9, 6-0 OVC), and Nick Stafford (15-6, 8-4 OVC). Arturo Santa Ruiz and Oscar Pachon (6-2, 3-2 OVC) with Harris and Yianni Doropoulos (6-0, 0-0) post the best records in doubles competition for TTU.
The Tigers will close out the season at home when they host Western Kentucky for the second time this season in non-conference play. The match is scheduled for Sunday, April 11, at 11 a.m. inside the TSU Tennis Complex.
