MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. --- The Tennessee State women’s golf team shot 11 strokes better on Tuesday than their performance on day one of the Ohio Valley Conference Championship. Carson Racich, Morgan Rood, Dhani McDowell and Haleigh Riley all cut strokes from their previous round while posting scoring rounds for TSU. As a team, the Tigers carded a 351 during the second round and are currently in ninth place at 713.
Racich shot a 6-over, 78, and moved up five spots on the leader board and is in a tie for 16th heading into the final day. The freshman struggled early as she was 4-over after her first three holes and was 7-over after 10 holes. Racich rebounded with two birdies and five pars over the final eight holes.
Racich started her comeback on par-5, 12th, as her third shot fell short of the green. The first-year chipped in from 30 feet for birdie. Racich followed up with her second birdie on the par-4, 13th, as she hit a 50 degree wedge from 115 yards to six feet.
Racich continued her solid play on No. 14, as she recovered from hitting a pitching wedge onto the green that checked and rolled back off the green into a pond. Facing a steep, uphill blind lie, the Loves Park, Ill. product hit a 58-degree wedge that hit the flag stick and stuck on the lip of the cup, just missing a save for par.
“I was striking the ball very well today,” Racich said. “I gained confidence off the tee and throughout my irons and wedges. Although today's high score came from plenty of missed putts I knew there was no way I was shooting in the 80’s again. I rallied and turned my game around on the back nine. I look forward to putting everything together tomorrow.”
Rood dropped two strokes on the opening hole, but came on the second hole and hit a 9-iron to six feet of the flag, setting up her lone birdie of the day. The sophomore finished the front nine at 4-over, but ran into trouble on the first three holes after the turn. Rood finished the entered the clubhouse with an 89 on day two.
McDowell cut strokes off her first round for the fourth consecutive tournament and posted a 90 on the day. On the par-4, 14th, McDowell opened with a drive down the middle of the fairway. The freshman followed with a 7-iron from 130 yards out and ended up on the back fringe. McDowell sank the putt from off the green for birdie.
Riley cut three strokes from the first round to finish with a 94. Savannah Szozda fell off the pace and just missed scoring for the Tigers.
The Tigers will be a part of the first pairings to take the course on the final day of the OVC Championship on Wednesday morning.
