OWENS CROSSROADS, Ala. --- Tennessee State struggled on day two of the Ohio Valley Conference Golf Championships. The Tigers dropped to ninth place after combining for a 56-over, 344, on the 6,050 yard, Par-72, Highlands Course at Hampton Cove.
TSU (333-344=677) will enter the final round trailing Eastern Illinois by 11 strokes. Murray State leads the team competition (286-290=576) at Even Par.
After a record breaking round on day one, Paige Harlin (75-84=159) followed up with her third lowest score of her career. On the par-5, 9th, Harlin hit a 6-iron on her third shot to three feet of the pin and sank the putt for her lone birdie of the day.
Morgan Rood (83-82=165) led the Tigers on the scoreboard shooting a 10-over, 82. On the par-3, 11th, Rood collected her second birdie in four holes. Her tee shot from 155 yards hit the back of the green and rolled down to 30 feet left of the flag. Rood drained the lengthy downhill putt for birdie.
Natalie Spicer and Savannah Szozda posted the final two scoring cards with identical 89’s. Spicer (83-89=172) dropped a six foot putt on the par-5, 17th, after sticking a 6-iron from 155 out for her lone birdie of the round. Spicer produced an up-and-down on the par-4, 12th, after finding the sand on her second shot.
Szozda (99-89=188) cut 10 strokes off her day one score, which included an up-and-down on the par-3, 4th. The freshman fell short of the green off the tee box and chipped to a foot of the hole, setting up the makeable putt to save par.
Haleigh Riley (92-95=187) posted a non-scoring 95 during round two. On the par-3, 16 th, Riley hit a 3-wood to 12 feet of the flag. The freshman just missed a birdie as her putt as her ball stopped inches from the cup, setting up a tap in for par.
Szozda will take to the course first on the final day of competition at 8:00 a.m. Riley will go out at 8:10 a.m. and will be followed by Spicer at 8:20 a.m., Rood at 8:30 a.m. and Harlin at 8:40 a.m.
