MURRAY, Ky. – The Tennessee State women’s golf team began their season on Monday at the Murray State Invitational. The Tigers are currently in 12th place after day one at the 6,017 yard, Par-72 Miller Memorial Golf Course.
Kelly Merkel registered the top score for TSU after firing an 89 on the first 18 holes. The senior hit five fairways and 10 greens on the day, while averaging a little over two putts a hole.
Fellow senior Sarah Needleman and junior Natalie Spicer each carded 91’s on Monday to back-up Merkel. Needleman equaled Merkel with 42 putts as she found six fairways and six greens. Spicer benifited from three up-and-downs during the first round as she registered nine fairways, four greens and used 35 putts.
Freshman Paige Harlin shot a 94 in her debut with the Tigers. Harlin highlighted her day with an up-and-down on the par-4, 11th. The Findlay, Ill. native left herself 130 off the tee box and fell three short of the green on her second shot. Harlin would just miss a birdie as she chipped to within an inch of the hole, setting up a tap in putt for par.
Harlin finished the first round by hitting five greens and five fairways.
Imani Stingley rounded out the scoring for the Tigers as she shot a 100 after a couple unfortunate breaks on a couple holes. Stingley found success on the greens needing just 37 putts on the day.
The final round of 18 holes will begin Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m.
