NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tigers played the final round of the 2012 Murray State Drake Creek Invitational on Tuesday in Ledbetter, Ky. The Par-72, 6,176 yard course was played on a 78 degree, sunny day with winds gusting up to 20-25 miles-per-hour.
TSU was the only squad in the 11-team field to improve their score in each round. Once again, the Tigers cut eleven strokes from their previous 18-holes to finish with a 373 and a three round total of 1152 (395-384-373).
Freshman Kelly Merkel carded a 10-over 82 and finished in a three-way tie for 31st (79-80-82=241). Sarah Needleman scored a 96-93-95=284 and Amelia Dap shot a 99-100-93=292 over the two-day event. Freshman Chelsea Martin (335) improved her score by ten strokes between the first two rounds and another eight over the final two rounds.
Central Arkansas claimed the team title with a 906 (306-293-307), as well as grabbing the individual champion when Julia Roth won an 18-hole playoff over Anna Carling of Arkansas State.
The Tigers will travel to Edwardsville, Ill., for the SIU-Edwardsville Intercollegiate Tournament on September 23-25.
