Tigers Complete Day One of Big Blue Intercollegiate
Nashville, Tenn. – The Tigers completed Day 1 of the 2013 Big Blue Intercollegiate at the General's Retreat Course at Hermitage Golf Club. The course plays as a Par-72, 5,954 yards. Monday was played under partly sunny skies with a slight breeze, 72 degrees and close to normal course conditions.
Tennessee State sits in sixth with a team score of 381. Kelly Merkel shot a 14-over, 86 and is 10 shots off the lead. Amelia Dap and Sarah Needleman finished the first round with a 93, Chelsea Marlin entered the clubhouse at 109 and Denisha Mumford had to withdraw from the competition due to injury.
Merkel led the Tigers with seven pars by hitting 12 fairways and nine greens. The freshman hit a big drive for 270-yards that carried over the right side bunker to set up a par on the par-4, 9th. On the par-4, 18th, Merkel made a tricky right-to-left putt from eight feet out to save par on the par-4, 18th.
Dap found 11 fairways and five greens as she recorded four pars on the day. The red-shirt freshman fell short of the green on her second shot on the par-4, 4th. Dap chipped to allow her a makeable one-putt to save par. On the par-4, 15th, Dap hit her second shot to the back of the green and dropped a 30-foot putt to save par.
Needleman finished with two pars as she found more success with her drives as she found 13 fairways and one green. Needleman came up short of the green on the par-3, 3rd and used a chip to within two feet of the cup to save par. The freshman executed a great up and down to save par on the par-4, 12th.
Marlin ended the first round by finding six fairways and two greens as she carded one par. The freshman sank a 40-foot putt to save par on the par-4, 4th.
The final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:00 am on Tuesday.
