Guice wins long jump in day one of OVC Championship

Charleston, Ill. - Martinique Guice spotlighted the Tigerbelles in day one of the 2011 OVC Indoor Track and Field Championship with Tennessee State University picking up one win while qualifying for the finals in three running events.

Guice, two-time defending indoor champion in the long jump, captured her third consecutive indoor crown in the event. She closed out the competition with a jump of 19' 6.25" (5.95m).

With the win, Guice picks up her seventh title in her track and field career at TSU. Her crowns include individual wins in indoor and outdoor competition. She first won the indoor long jump title in 2009 as a sophomore and has successfully defended it since. She also picked up back-to-back wins in outdoor competition in the long jump.

On the track, Guice joined Gabrielle Todd and Brittney Washington qualifying for the finals on Saturday.

Guice recorded the fifth fastest time (7.67 secs.) in the 60m to move on to the final heat. Todd ran a time of 57.10 seconds in the 400m continue on and Washington posted her fastest time of the year in the 800m at 2:19.90 to advance.

TSU also received points behind performances from Teannah Holland, Daniecce Ward, and Andrea Fenderson.

Holland's toss of 15.60m in the weight throw was good for fourth. Fenderson finished fifth in the long jump (5.55m) and Ward tacked on seventh place in the high jump (1.60m).

The distance medley relay (Breanna Adams, Charita Harris, Kya Riley, Brittney Washington) also posted seventh with a time of 14:02.12.

The Tigerbelles currently sits in fourth in the overall standings with 23 points. Eastern Illinois leads the field of eight teams with 61.33 points. The finals will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, beginning with the women's weight throw at 11 a.m.
